EMMELINE's Onboard Systems
PROPULSION
ENGINE: Single 1947 Chrysler Royal Straight 8 gas engine.
ENGINE HEAT EXCHANGER: Located on port side of engine hatch opening with belt-driven raw water pump; coolant pump is engine driven on port side of engine block.
FUEL SYSTEM: Fuel tanks one each on port and starboard below the pilothouse sole, approximately 150 gallons each. These are the original iron tanks. The fuel filter, shutoff valves & sight gauge are located on the port side of the forward engine room bulkhead. Fuel tank fills are located port and starboard on the side decks just forward of the pilothouse companionway doors.
EXHAUST SYSTEM: Dry iron exhaust loop wrapped with thermal insulation, connecting to stainless-steel raw- water wet-exhaust adapter, then to muffler, then to transom via rubber exhaust hose along port side of hull.
CRUISING SPEED: Our typical cruising speed is 7½ knots at 1750 rpm. Paying attention to currents helps significantly to increase speed and fuel economy.
ELECTRICAL
BATTERIES & CHARGERS
(1) 12-volt Group 27 flooded lead-acid Engine Start battery, charged by 12-volt engine alternator, or by shore-power battery charger (located on the starboard side of the engine room bulkhead) or by roof-top solar panels via automatic combiner to 12-volt House battery.
(1) 12-volt Group 27 flooded lead-acid House battery, charged by roof-top solar panels, or by shore-power battery charger, or by alternator via automatic combiner to the 12-volt Start battery.
(1) 32-volt bank consisting of (4) 8-volt sealed lead-acid batteries in series. The 32-volt systems consist of anchor windlass on foredeck, horn air compressor (located under the port berth in the forward cabin), and all lights EXCEPT interior lights in aft cabin, which have been converted to 12-volt LED lights. The 32-volt bank is charged by a shore power charger (located under the icebox) or by the belt-driven 32-volt alternator on the engine.
The 12-volt Solar Panel is located at the aft edge of the pilothouse roof; the solar controller is located in the aft cabin above the icebox. A 3-way voltmeter is installed in the aft starboard seat locker in the pilothouse to read voltage of House battery, Engine Start battery, or 32-volt bank.
AC SHORE POWER
A 30-amp 110-volt AC shore power inlet is installed in the cabin side just aft of the port pilothouse companionway door. A shutoff breaker is located in the seat locker just inside the companionway door. Circuit then goes to an isolation transformer located in the engine room on the port side of the aft bulkhead adjacent to the engine room access opening from the galley. Circuit then goes to the main shore power panel on the port side of the pilothouse near the helm. This main panel has breakers for 12-volt and 32-volt installed battery chargers, and 110-volt AC outlets in all interior cabin spaces. A 12-volt shower power charger is located on the starboard side of the forward engine room bulkhead.
COMBINED 12-VOLT & 32-VOLT DC PANELS
Main DC panel is located in the forward cabin behind the mirror and contains the fuses or breakers for most 12- & 32-volt loads. Main battery shutoff and parallel switches are located in the pilothouse. Individual circuit switches for various lights are on the dash beside the engine instrument panel.
An Auxiliary DC panel is located in the galley, to starboard of the ladder, to provide for galley-related loads and the aft bilge pump.
ELECTRO-GUARD CORROSION CONTROL SYSTEM is installed in the aft cabin on the aft bulkhead, port side. A schematic of the wiring as installed is in the ship’s maintenance notebook.
GALLEY STOVE AND FUEL SYSTEMS
The stove system is comprised of the stove in the galley, a bulk fuel tank in the lazarette, a fuel filter and transfer pump under the galley sink, a day tank of approximately 1 gallon overhead in the aft cabin, and a fan mounted inside the stove. The fuel transfer pump and the fan are both 12-volt, powered from the auxiliary DC panel in the galley near the icebox.
The fuel transfer pump draws from the bulk tank to fill the overhead day tank, which can be observed in the clear plastic fuel lines leading to and from the day tank. Overflow when the tank is full feeds back to the bulk tank. (NOTE: The bulk tank has not yet been re-installed in the lazarette.) Note: The air vent valve in the overflow line must be closed while filling the day tank to prevent a fuel spill in the aft cabin.
FRESH WATER
Fresh water tanks are located in the lazarette, however they have not been reinstalled since being removed for hull framing work in 2020. Fresh water strainer and water pressure pump are located under the galley stove, with the water system manifold located under the galley sink.
WASTEWATER
The manual forward head is fully operational with a holding tank under the chain locker. All of the components of the forward head except the holding tank itself are visible. The aft head has not been reinstalled after being removed for the hull work in 2020. Owners were investigating the possible installation of a composting toilet. The original sinks in the galley and forward head are plumbed but awaiting reinstallation of the freshwater; the aft head sink is not plumbed at present.
